Cass County, Illinois--home of
Arenzville, Ashland, Beardstown, Chandlerville, and Virginia, welcomes you to
our website, which is designed to share our history, as well as promote what is
happening in each community.
Cass County is located in west central Illinois. The western line of Cass County
borders the Illinois River. Cass County was named after Lewis Cass, a soldier,
later promoted to general who served during the war of 1812. He was a statesman,
territorial Governor of Michigan, minister to France, United States Senator from
Michigan, Secretary of War under Jackson, Secretary of State under Buchanan, and
at one time a prominent candidate for the Presidency.
Cass County was formed from the northern part of Morgan County in 1837,
including an approximate three-mile stip of land. Aside from being a part of
Morgan County, Cass County was previously a part of St. Clair County, then a
part of Madison County. Once Illinois became a state, we were a part of Sangamon
County.
Cass County, Illinois consists of the Village of Arenzville, the Village of
Ashland, the Village of Chandlerville, Beardstown, and Virginia. Townships
include Arenzville, Ashland, Bluff Springs, Chandlerville, Hagener, Panther
Creek, Philadelphia, Sangamon Valley, and Virginia.
